Total goals (over/under) in football: lines, odds and settlement
The total goals market asks one question: will the match produce more or fewer goals than a set line? As of 26 September 2026, Odds.Directory tracks it on 1052 football events across 210 competitions.
What the market is
A total goals market sets a line and offers two selections: over and under. Only the combined number of goals scored by both teams matters; who scores them, and who wins, is irrelevant to settlement.
Unless a market states otherwise, the full-match total covers normal time including stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs are not counted. Separate markets exist for the first and second halves.
How the lines settle
Half-goal lines such as 2.5 always produce a winner. With 2.5, three or more goals settle the over and two or fewer settle the under.
Whole-goal lines such as 2 or 3 can land exactly on the number. On a line of 3, exactly three goals returns the stake as a push, four or more settle the over and two or fewer settle the under. Whole lines therefore trade a little of the win for protection against the most likely exact total.
Reading the odds
Divide 100 by a decimal price to get the probability the market is pricing. An over at 2.5 implies 40%, and an under at 1.5 implies 66.7%. The over and under on the same line add up to slightly more than 100%; the difference is the bookmaker's margin.
Each match on Odds.Directory shows the main total line with its opening price, current or closing price, and the highest and lowest prices tracked. Alternative lines sit in the full market list.
How totals move
Before kick-off the price on a line can shorten or drift, and the main line itself can move, for example from 2.5 to 3, when the market re-rates how open a match will be. In play, totals react quickly to goals and to the time remaining, so live prices change far more often than pre-match ones.
Our pages report these movements as recorded. They show what the prices did, not why they moved.
What our data shows
The most common full-match total lines in our football data are 2.5 (881 markets), 3.5 (738), 1.5 (602), 3 (568), 2 (565) and 1 (524). The 2.5 line leads, which is why it is often treated as the headline over/under figure for a match.
Most events carry several lines at once, so these counts exceed the number of events. As finished matches accumulate, this page will add how often the main line settled over or under.
